Polyethylene Packaging Leader's Solution Enables Wagner's to Become the First Supplier Offering Consumers an Easy Open/Close Re-sealable Package

TERRE HAUTE, INDIANA (June 9, 2006) - When Wagner's, LLC, the United States' largest privately owned supplier of wild bird food, wanted to bring new package functionality and brand awareness to the marketplace using the first stand-up, re-sealable package , it turned to one of the company's oldest partners. Bemis Polyethylene Packaging Division (PPD) has been working with Wagner's for almost 50 years to bring innovative and eye-catching packaging to national grocery, farm/feed and general merchandise markets.

According to Karl Eisleben, senior vice president of sales and marketing, these new packaging enhancements were initiated based on information obtained from a consumer insight study of the wild bird food marketplace, including consumer and retailer product preferences such as brand awareness, packaging functionality and product usage information.

"As a market leader in the wild bird food category, it is our responsibility to meet the needs of our customers," said Eisleben. "The research showed that one of the most important feature/benefits to consumers was a re-sealable package. This design will help prevent spillage, which reduces wasted bird food and attracting unwanted pests, while also preserving freshness and quality. As we have in the past, we turned to Bemis PPD to make it happen."

Durable and Functional

Daryl Rose, Bemis engineer, said the package's formulation is a blend of polyethylene and polyester with 2.5 to 3.5 millimeter gauge thickness. Rose said this gives the package the required strength to stand on end, while providing a barrier to keep out moisture and pests. Bemis used Pactiv's Hefty Slide-Rite® technology, the easiest closure to operate, to smoothly and securely close the bag without worrying about lining up the tracks.

John Casani, Bemis sales representative, said Wagner's redesign of its packaging includes a launch of five new premium products, four deluxe blends and a new value product line to further position the company as a wild bird food category leader. With the launch of the new products and size variations, Bemis is now running more than 70 different bags for Wagner's.

Rose said Bemis' graphics team used laminates and vibrant inks to create a unified look and feel for all product lines to promote continuity and brand awareness. The graphics on all the bags are between two layers of film, so they won't chip or flake -- very important for product display, as well as brand awareness after purchase.

"Many retailers have certain requirements when it comes to packaging such as the look, shelf space, how it can be displayed and other criteria," said Casani, Bemis sales representative. "We believe the new packaging will open up new markets and methods of distribution for Wagner's."

"You have to give credit to Wagner's for having the insight and fortitude to change 50 years of packaging, and to Bemis PPD for understanding the customer's needs and having the creativity and experience to get the job done," he added.
